The wheelchair we chose for Loui after several others simply didn’t work for him.

Why this one worked better for us

• Adjustable rather than one-size-fits-all. The frame can be adjusted around your dog’s measurements instead of relying on breed name alone.
• Fit and balance can be checked properly. With a spinal-condition dog, where the frame sits and how the body is supported matters.
• Extra support can be added if needed. Belly support and alternative harness options are available for dogs that need more mid-body support.

Who we think this is worth considering for

• Dogs with significant hind-leg weakness
• Dogs with paralysis who have been cleared for wheelchair use
• Owners who want fitting help rather than guessing the setup themselves
• French Bulldogs and similarly compact dogs where generic off-the-shelf frames have not worked well

Not every dog with IVDD needs a wheelchair. Ask your vet, physiotherapist or rehabilitation professional when wheelchair use is appropriate for your dog.

Our strongest fitting advice

Before regular use, ask your vet, veterinary physiotherapist or rehabilitation professional to check the wheelchair fit. Make sure your dog’s back and mid-body are properly supported, the frame is balanced correctly, and the setup is not creating unnecessary pressure or strain.

If your dog needs extra mid-body support, ask whether a belly support or alternative harness setup is appropriate rather than assuming the standard setup is enough.

What we learnt the expensive way

A wheelchair is one of the products where we personally would not choose on price alone.

That does not mean every cheaper wheelchair is bad. It means that for a dog recovering from IVDD, with paralysis or significant hind-leg weakness, an unsuitable or poorly fitted chair may simply fail to give them the support they need.

For us, Loui’s comfort and safety mattered more than finding the cheapest frame.

Before you order

• Ask your vet, physiotherapist or rehabilitation professional when wheelchair use is appropriate for your dog.
• Measure your dog carefully using the supplier’s current fitting guide.
• Do not assume “French Bulldog size” automatically means the fit will be right.
• Once fitted, ask your vet/physio to check that your dog’s back is supported properly and the chair is balanced correctly before regular use.
• Ask the supplier to check the setup if you are unsure about frame height, balance, harness position or belly support.
• Check contact points regularly for rubbing and watch your dog for discomfort or fatigue.

Our recommendation: if your dog has significant weakness or paralysis, use both the supplier’s fitting support and your veterinary/rehab team rather than trying to guess the setup yourself.
