Think your dog may have IVDD?

You do not need to understand everything at once. This page gives you a calm route to the information that matters first, then helps you choose the right next step.

Seek urgent veterinary help now if your dog suddenly cannot stand or walk, weakness is rapidly worsening, pain is severe or uncontrolled, or your dog is unable to urinate. Call ahead where possible so the clinic can advise you on safe transport and availability.

What to do right now

1

Keep movement controlled

Prevent running, jumping and stairs while you arrange veterinary advice. Do not stretch, manipulate or “test” your dog's back.

2

Support them when moving

Move slowly and keep the body supported. If your dog is painful or weak, ask the veterinary team how they want you to transport them.

3

Contact a vet

IVDD cannot be confirmed from symptoms alone. A veterinary examination is the right next step, and some dogs need urgent referral or imaging.

When everything else is terrifying, every step matters.

We're here to help you every step of the way — with clearer information, practical resources and routes to specialist support inspired by Louie's own IVDD journey.

This page is educational information, not a diagnosis or treatment plan. IVDD can resemble other neurological and orthopaedic problems, and treatment decisions depend on an individual veterinary assessment. If you are worried your dog is deteriorating, contact a veterinary professional promptly.
