What can IVDD treatment cost in the U.S.?

There is no single nationwide IVDD price, but there are useful public reference points. The safest way to plan is to separate the cost of MRI, surgery and hospitalisation, then look at real specialist examples and owner-reported bills without pretending they are all directly comparable.

Useful U.S. reference points

These figures come from different kinds of sources, so they should not be added together as if they were one standard package. They are there to show the scale of the possible bill.

Dog MRI · 2026 national reference
$1,811–$4,140

CareCredit reports a 2026 national average of about $2,285 for a dog MRI, with geography, anaesthesia and clinic type affecting the price.

IVDD surgery · general reference
$2,000–$8,000

PetMD gives this range for IVDD surgery itself and notes that consultations, lab work, medication and other pre/post-operative costs may be extra.

Specialist package · Bay Area
$10,000–$12,000

Remedy Veterinary Specialists currently publishes an all-inclusive IVDD package including consultation, MRI, spinal surgery, overnight hospitalisation and a post-op rehab consultation.

The important distinction: an MRI price, a surgery-only price and an all-in specialist package are three different things. Ask exactly what is included before comparing quotes.

What owners report online

Owner forums are useful for showing how wide the real-world spread can be, but they are anecdotal. Location, emergency status, dog size, spinal level, hospital stay and complications can make two bills look completely different.

Recent owner examples

  • A September 2025 French Bulldog thread from Southern California described a quote of about $18,000 including MRI; another owner in the same discussion reported about $10,000 in Irvine.
  • A July 2026 IVDD Support Group thread described MRI quotes of roughly $3,900–$5,500.
  • Older U.S. IVDD owner reports also include all-in MRI + surgery + hospitalisation totals around $7,500–$17,000, showing how strongly region and hospital type matter.

So what should an owner actually plan for?

A more useful rule than a fake national average is this: MRI alone is commonly a low-to-mid four-figure expense; surgery can add several thousand more; and a full emergency neurology pathway can become a five-figure bill. In expensive metropolitan areas, published specialist packages and owner quotes can go well beyond $10,000.

If you are uninsured: building an emergency plan around the possibility of a five-figure specialist bill is more realistic than assuming one fixed “average”. If your dog is already symptomatic, ask the hospital for an expected estimate and the upper amount they may need authorisation for.

What can make up the bill?

Emergency care

ER consultation, triage, pain control, stabilisation, bloodwork and transfer.

Neurology referral

Specialist consultation and neurological examination.

Advanced imaging

MRI or CT, plus anaesthesia or sedation and specialist interpretation where required.

Surgery & hospitalisation

Operating room, surgeon, anaesthesia, decompression procedure, medications, nursing and length of stay.

Recovery

Rechecks, prescriptions, rehabilitation, mobility support and home-care supplies.

Complications

Longer hospitalisation, urinary care, extra imaging or additional procedures can materially change the total.

Questions to ask before you authorise treatment

  • Is the neurology consultation included?
  • Is MRI/CT and anaesthesia included?
  • Does the surgical estimate include hospitalisation, and for how many nights?
  • Are medications and discharge prescriptions included?
  • What could increase the estimate?
  • When will you contact me before exceeding it?
  • What are the likely recheck and rehabilitation costs?
  • What payment or financing options does the hospital offer?
  • What documentation will my insurer need?
  • Can you provide the estimate in writing and itemised?
