Can you prevent IVDD in dogs?
IVDD cannot always be prevented. Genetics, breed and age can play a major role. But owners can reduce some avoidable strain and create a safer everyday environment for dogs that may be vulnerable to spinal problems.
Prevention advice is not appropriate for a dog showing sudden pain, weakness, wobbliness or difficulty walking. Restrict unnecessary movement and contact a vet promptly.
Risk reduction is not a guarantee
IVDD risk is influenced strongly by biology and breed predisposition. Research into modifiable lifestyle factors is mostly observational and does not prove that any one home-management strategy can prevent disc disease.
Some dogs develop IVDD despite careful ownership. The goal is not to make owners feel responsible for a condition they cannot fully control.
A sensible prevention plan focuses on maintaining healthy body condition, appropriate fitness, safer movement around the home and recognising neurological changes early.
Everyday ways to reduce avoidable risk
Keep your dog fit, not fragile
Regular appropriate activity supports general conditioning. Observational Dachshund studies have associated greater regular activity with lower IVDD or disc-calcification measures, but they do not prove exercise prevents disease.
Aim for a healthy body condition
Maintaining an appropriate body condition is sensible for general health and mobility. Some observational research has associated overweight status with higher IVDD occurrence, but evidence does not show that weight management alone prevents IVDD.
Make repeated high-risk access easier
Stable ramps, controlled access and non-slip surfaces can make sofas, beds and cars easier to navigate. No ramp or single home change is proven to prevent IVDD.
Know your dog's individual risks
Breed, genetics, age, previous spinal disease and clinical history all matter. A higher-risk breed deserves awareness, not excessive restriction of a healthy dog's normal life.
Recognise changes early
New spinal pain, wobbliness, weakness, dragging or difficulty walking deserves veterinary attention rather than being dismissed as stubbornness or ageing.
Prevention evidence is useful, but incomplete

Look at where repeated jumps, slips and awkward landings happen
Sofas and beds
If your dog repeatedly launches on and off furniture, consider controlled access, a stable ramp or preventing access when unsupervised.
Cars
Lift appropriately or use a stable access solution rather than encouraging repeated high jumps into and out of a vehicle.
Stairs
For dogs with known spinal disease or individual restrictions, ask your vet or rehabilitation professional whether stair use should be limited. Blanket rules are not appropriate for every dog.
Slippery floors
Runners, mats and other non-slip surfaces can improve traction in high-traffic areas, particularly for dogs with reduced stability.
Breed and genetics matter
IVDD is particularly associated with chondrodystrophic breeds, but spinal disc disease can affect many dogs. French Bulldogs, Dachshunds and other predisposed breeds deserve particular awareness.
Knowing that a dog is higher risk should encourage sensible management and faster recognition of symptoms — not fear or excessive restriction of a healthy dog's normal life.
Dogs with a history of IVDD need an individual plan
Follow the individual recovery plan
After an IVDD episode or surgery, the specialist's instructions take priority over generic prevention advice.
Use rehabilitation strategically
A veterinary rehabilitation professional can assess strength, gait, movement and home setup and recommend exercises appropriate to the individual dog.
Act quickly on recurrence signs
New pain, weakness, wobbliness or altered walking after a previous episode should prompt veterinary advice rather than a wait-and-see approach.
Common IVDD prevention myths
Myth: One ramp prevents IVDD
No single product can guarantee prevention. Ramps may reduce certain repeated jumps, but IVDD has complex biological and genetic causes.
Myth: At-risk dogs should never exercise
Excessive restriction can have downsides. Healthy dogs generally benefit from appropriate activity; dogs recovering from IVDD need the specific restrictions prescribed by their veterinary team.
Myth: Supplements can stop IVDD
No supplement should be presented as a proven way to prevent disc disease. Discuss any supplement with your vet, particularly if your dog takes medication.
IVDD prevention questions
Should dogs at higher risk of IVDD use ramps?
Ramps can be useful where a dog regularly jumps on and off sofas, beds or into cars. The ramp should be stable, non-slip and appropriately angled. For some dogs, blocking access altogether may be safer depending on mobility and veterinary advice.
Should dogs at risk of IVDD avoid stairs?
There is no single rule for every healthy at-risk dog. Dogs with current or previous spinal disease may have individual restrictions, so ask the veterinary team familiar with your dog.
Does keeping my dog slim help?
Maintaining an appropriate body condition supports general mobility and avoids unnecessary load. Observational studies have linked overweight status with higher reported IVDD occurrence, but that does not prove weight management alone prevents IVDD.
Can IVDD come back after recovery?
Dogs with previous disc disease can experience future spinal problems. Follow your specialist's long-term advice and seek veterinary assessment if familiar symptoms return.
