What is IVDD in dogs?

IVDD is an umbrella term for disorders in which an intervertebral disc degenerates and herniates. Disc material can extrude or protrude into the vertebral canal, causing spinal pain and, when the spinal cord or nerve roots are affected, weakness, loss of coordination or paralysis.

A Simple Explanation

IVDD affects the cushioning discs between the bones of the spine.

Intervertebral discs sit between the vertebrae and help the spine move while absorbing load. With IVDD, a disc degenerates and may herniate into the vertebral canal.

The spinal cord can be injured by compression, by the impact of rapidly extruded disc material, or by a combination of both. The effect ranges from spinal pain to weakness, loss of coordination and, in severe cases, paralysis. Source 1

Disc types explained

Hansen Type I and Type II: what do they mean?

Veterinary literature still commonly uses the historical Hansen classification to describe two important patterns of intervertebral disc herniation, but modern classification recognises that canine disc disease is more varied than two labels alone.2

Hansen Type I — disc extrusion

Degenerated material from the centre of the disc breaks through the outer annulus and enters the vertebral canal. In acute thoracolumbar cases, spinal cord injury can reflect both compression and the impact or contusion caused by rapidly extruded material.1

Type I extrusion is strongly associated with chondrodystrophic breeds, in which accelerated disc degeneration is linked with an FGF4 retrogene on chromosome 12.1

Hansen Type II — disc protrusion

The outer part of the disc degenerates and protrudes into the vertebral canal rather than suddenly extruding a large amount of central disc material. It is often associated with a more gradual, chronic compressive problem, although individual presentations vary.2

Not every IVDD case fits neatly into Type I or Type II. Modern veterinary classification describes additional forms of disc-associated spinal disease. Your MRI or CT report may therefore use more specific terminology.2
Aubenord interpretation: for owners, the useful question is not which label sounds worse. What matters is what the neurological examination and imaging show about the location of the problem, the degree of spinal cord or nerve-root involvement, and what function your dog still has.

Breed Predisposition

Are some dogs more predisposed to IVDD?

Yes. IVDD can affect many dogs, but inherited body and disc characteristics mean some breeds are more predisposed than others. We avoid using unverified lifetime-risk percentages and focus on what owners can act on safely.

What does chondrodystrophic mean?

Chondrodystrophic breeds have inherited skeletal and cartilage characteristics associated with earlier intervertebral disc degeneration. In plain English, some breeds are biologically more predisposed to disc disease than others.

Dachshunds, French Bulldogs, Corgis, Shih Tzus, Beagles, Basset Hounds, Pekingese and Lhasa Apsos are among the breeds commonly discussed in relation to IVDD predisposition.

Predisposition does not equal diagnosis

Breed risk can make IVDD more likely, but it cannot confirm the cause of pain, weakness or gait changes. Any dog with concerning neurological signs still needs an individual veterinary assessment.

Pain or sensitivity

Crying out, trembling, a tense posture, reluctance to move or be touched, and neck or back pain can occur.

Conservative management

May be appropriate for selected dogs depending on neurological status, pain and the veterinary assessment. The plan can include prescribed activity restriction, medication and carefully controlled return to activity.

Recovery and Outlook

Recovery depends heavily on neurological severity.

Dogs with IVDD do not all start from the same neurological point, so one recovery percentage cannot describe every case. Walking status, voluntary movement, deep pain perception in severe cases, imaging findings, treatment and complications can all matter to prognosis. Source 1

Is IVDD an emergency?

It can be. Sudden weakness, inability to walk, severe pain or new bladder problems require urgent veterinary assessment.

Can a dog recover from IVDD without surgery?

Some dogs can be managed without surgery, depending on neurological status, pain and veterinary assessment. More severe or progressive cases may need surgical treatment.

Can IVDD happen again?

Yes. A dog can later develop disease or herniation involving another disc, so follow-up and sensible risk reduction remain important.
