IVDD breed guides: understand risk without living in fear
Some breeds are more prone to intervertebral disc disease, but breed risk is not a diagnosis. These guides explain what breed predisposition can mean, which warning signs matter and what to discuss with your veterinary team.

Dachshund
One of the best-studied breed associations with IVDD, with modern population-level research as well as long-established clinical evidence.
French Bulldog
French Bulldogs have documented susceptibility to disc disease, and problems can involve the neck as well as the back.
Welsh Corgi
Corgis are associated with IVDD risk, while other neurological conditions can produce overlapping hind-limb signs.
Shih Tzu
Shih Tzus are represented in veterinary IVDD research, so this guide uses breed-relevant evidence rather than borrowing figures from Dachshunds.
Beagle
Beagles are a chondrodystrophic breed with recognised biological and epidemiological links to disc degeneration.
Basset Hound
Basset Hounds have short-limbed skeletal traits linked to FGF4 biology, but an individual dog’s symptoms still need clinical assessment.
Pekingese
Pekingese have a recognised historical association with IVDD in veterinary epidemiology.
Lhasa Apso
Lhasa Apsos have also been identified in epidemiological work as having increased IVDD risk compared with many other dogs.
Breed risk, in plain English
What breed predisposition actually means
Breed research can explain why some dogs are more vulnerable. It cannot tell you that a particular dog has IVDD, how severe an episode is, or what the outcome will be.
Higher risk is not certainty
A predisposed breed has a higher chance of disc disease at population level. Many dogs in that breed will never have a diagnosed IVDD episode.
Symptoms matter more than breed name
New pain, weakness, wobbliness, dragging, knuckling or loss of walking ability should be assessed on their own merits, regardless of breed.
Outcome is individual
Prognosis depends on the neurological examination, imaging where needed, treatment, complications and the individual dog — not breed label alone.
What is FGF4, and why do people mention it?
Some short-legged breeds carry extra copies of a gene called FGF4. One particular FGF4 retrogene has been linked with chondrodystrophy — a pattern of skeletal development associated with earlier disc degeneration and higher susceptibility to Hansen Type I disc disease.
The practical message is simpler: some breeds are biologically predisposed to earlier disc degeneration, but genetics still cannot diagnose an episode at home.

What breed information cannot tell you
Breed, body shape or genetic status cannot diagnose IVDD, grade a current episode or predict an individual dog’s recovery.
