IVDD genetics and chondrodystrophic dog breeds
IVDD risk is influenced by genetics and breed biology, but risk is not destiny. Certain chondrodystrophic breeds have a recognised predisposition to earlier intervertebral disc degeneration. Understanding that background can help owners recognise warning signs without assuming that every back problem is IVDD.
What does chondrodystrophic mean?
Chondrodystrophy describes a pattern of cartilage and skeletal development seen in several dog breeds. In some of these breeds, the same biology is associated with intervertebral discs degenerating and calcifying earlier, which can increase susceptibility to Hansen type I disc extrusion.
The FGF4 retrogene and IVDD risk
A retrogene is a copied piece of genetic material that has become inserted elsewhere in the genome. Research identified an FGF4 retrogene insertion on canine chromosome 12 (CFA12) associated with chondrodystrophy and Hansen type I IVDD risk. Later work found the CFA12 FGF4 retrogene was associated with younger age at first disc surgery and greater risk of disc herniation in the populations studied.
Genetics help explain why IVDD clusters strongly in some breeds, but an individual dog’s diagnosis, severity or recovery cannot be predicted from breed or genetic status alone.
Which breeds are commonly associated with IVDD?
Breed associations vary between studies and populations. Veterinary research has identified increased IVDD risk or chondrodystrophic disc biology in breeds including Dachshunds, French Bulldogs, Beagles, Welsh Corgis, Basset Hounds, Pekingese and Shih Tzus, among others. Non-chondrodystrophic dogs can also develop disc disease.

French Bulldogs
A recognised predisposed breed with breed-specific patterns described in spinal-disease research.
Welsh Corgis
Welsh Corgis are represented in veterinary research on IVDD and chondrodystrophic disc disease. Breed association provides risk context; it does not diagnose a gait or spinal problem.
Basset Hounds
Basset Hounds have published evidence relevant to short-limbed skeletal biology and spinal disease, but an individual dog still needs clinical assessment.
Does a high-risk breed need genetic screening?
Screening and breeding programmes are breed- and country-specific. For an individual pet, the useful conversation is with your vet about body condition, appropriate activity, recognising neurological signs and what to do if symptoms appear. A genetic risk result is not a substitute for a neurological examination when a dog is unwell.
Can IVDD be prevented if it is genetic?
No strategy can guarantee prevention of a disc extrusion in a genetically predisposed dog. Risk reduction focuses on sensible body condition, appropriate conditioning, safer environments and early recognition rather than promising that stairs, ramps, harnesses or supplements can eliminate genetic risk.
